Key Responsibilities
As a Wood Fitter at Cherd Africa, your work will be hands-on, varied, and project-driven. The role demands a blend of technical skill, precision, and an eye for design. You’ll be an integral part of the installation team, bringing design drawings to life on-site.
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Cut, shape, and install wooden fittings including doors, wardrobes, cabinets, and skirting boards for various types of properties
- Interpret project designs and technical drawings accurately to guide the fitting and installation process from start to finish
- Conduct site measurements and make precise adjustments to wood pieces to ensure a perfect fit and seamless joinery
- Assemble furniture components and fittings using manual tools (chisels, hammers, hand saws) and power machines (drills, routers, jigsaws)
- Perform high-end finishing tasks such as sanding, staining, polishing, and varnishing to deliver a professional, lasting appearance
- Follow project timelines strictly, working efficiently and ensuring that quality work is delivered within deadlines
- Inspect and maintain carpentry tools and equipment, reporting faults and ensuring tools are stored securely and safely
- Maintain high safety standards on job sites and workshops by following occupational health and safety procedures and wearing appropriate PPE
- Collaborate with supervisors, project managers, interior designers, and fellow artisans to ensure smooth execution of custom installations
- Ensure quality control by performing routine checks at every stage of the fitting process, verifying that installations meet the specified standards and dimensions
- Document and report daily progress or any materials required for continued project execution, working closely with inventory or procurement teams
- Train or guide junior team members where necessary, sharing knowledge and ensuring best practices are adhered to
- Adapt fittings and designs on-site if needed due to architectural changes or client feedback, while maintaining the highest quality
- Communicate professionally with clients or site owners when necessary, representing Cherd Africa’s brand positively and courteously
This role is physically demanding and will require working both in indoor workshops and on-site construction or renovation locations. Flexibility, physical stamina, and time management will be key traits for success.
Qualifications and Skills
Cherd Africa is looking for a results-driven professional with a strong track record in carpentry, cabinetry, or wood fitting. The ideal candidate should be motivated, detail-oriented, and possess both the technical skills and soft skills needed to thrive in fast-paced project environments.
Minimum Requirements:
- Certificate or Diploma in Carpentry, Woodworking, Joinery, Building Technology, or any relevant technical discipline from a recognized institution
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in wood fitting, cabinetry, interior finishing, or furniture installation, preferably within commercial or residential projects
- Demonstrable portfolio showcasing previous wood fitting or custom furniture projects (photos, references, or samples will be required at the interview stage)
Technical Competencies:
- Expertise in handling tools such as table saws, routers, electric planers, pneumatic nail guns, measuring tapes, and hand drills
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, furniture blueprints, and specification sheets with accuracy
- Knowledge of wood types and the appropriate treatments, including hardwoods, softwoods, MDF, plywood, laminates, and veneer
- Familiarity with joinery techniques such as dovetail joints, mortise and tenon, biscuit joining, doweling, and edge banding
- Experience in furniture assembly, built-in wardrobes, custom shelving units, kitchen cabinets, and skirting board installations
- Excellent finishing skills, including sanding, painting, varnishing, and polishing wood surfaces for client-ready aesthetics
Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail with an emphasis on precision and clean finishes
- Reliable time management and organizational ability to handle multiple project assignments
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to report problems and progress to supervisors clearly and promptly
