The role combines market discovery, trial coordination, and unit economics testing to identify crops, buyers, and aggregation models that can scale reliably. Successful candidates will directly influence how agricultural value chains are designed, validated, and operationalized.

Key Responsibilities
Market Discovery & Buyer Research (Approx. 60%)
- Identify, profile, and qualify buyers including processors, aggregators, institutional buyers, and export-adjacent firms.
- Conduct structured buyer conversations to document crop types, quality specifications, moisture limits, packaging standards, traceability needs, indicative price bands, volumes, payment terms, and expectations.
- Maintain accurate buyer intelligence files with factual, documented inputs only.
- Prioritize buyers using a structured framework focused on scalability, reliability, and payment discipline.
Trial & Sample Coordination (Approx. 25%)
- Coordinate preparation, drying, packaging, and delivery of samples in line with agreed quality rules.
- Capture structured buyer feedback, including acceptance or rejection reasons, using standardized tools.
- Manage a clear pipeline from leads to trials, outcomes, and repeat interest or negotiation.
- Share trial insights promptly with field, quality assurance, and product teams to address root causes.
Unit Economics & Assumption Testing (Approx. 15%)
- Compare buyer price bands against real operational costs including collection, drying, packing, transport, and commissions.
- Assess financial viability of value chains and flag margin, cost, or payment risks early.
- Build simple, accurate financial scenarios such as break-even analysis, sensitivity testing, and late-payment impacts.
Additional Responsibilities
- Map agricultural value chains (e.g. mango, chilli, ginger, onions, coffee, tomato, spices) and identify bottlenecks.
- Define quality assurance and traceability rules supported by digital logs and field data.
- Design aggregation and collection models that preserve quality, pool volume, and ensure traceable payments.
- Lead buyer negotiations and support MOUs or offtake agreements covering price, quality, volumes, and payment timelines.
- Build partnerships with aggregators, financiers, and public-sector stakeholders where necessary.
- Produce concise market briefs, dashboards, and operational insights for decision-making.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Horticulture, Supply Chain, Development Studies, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree is an added advantage but not mandatory.
Experience
- 2–3 years’ experience in market access, value-chain development, or agri-commodity commercialization.
- Direct experience working with buyers, processors, aggregators, or exporters.
- Practical experience designing aggregation models and negotiating MOUs or offtake agreements.
- Field experience in East Africa and with crops such as mango, chilli, coffee, tomato, or spices is highly desirable.
Technical Skills
- Strong Excel and spreadsheet modeling skills for unit economics and scenario analysis.
- Familiarity with value-chain analysis tools including actor mapping and gross margin analysis.
- Experience with digital platforms, traceability systems, or agri-tech solutions is an advantage.
- Ability to use AI tools such as ChatGPT or similar platforms to validate assumptions and improve efficiency.
