Introduction

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), in partnership with the Danish Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is calling for applications for fully sponsored vocational training scholarships under the Kenya TVET Project 2025.

This scholarship is ideal for young people who want to gain hands-on, job-ready skills in the Building Construction sector, including Plumbing, Carpentry, Electrical and Solar Installation. The initiative is part of Kenya’s broader agenda to build a technically competent workforce and reduce youth unemployment by empowering the next generation of artisans and construction specialists.

Successful applicants will undergo high-quality training at NITA Athi River and benefit from full tuition sponsorship, a structured industrial attachment, and internationally recognized trade certifications.

Available Training Tracks

The program focuses on key high-demand technical skill areas within the construction and green energy sectors:

  1. Plumbing & Pipe Fitting
  2. Carpentry & Joinery
  3. Electrical Installation
  4. Solar PV Installation & Maintenance

Program Categories

1. Regular Programs for Form Four Leavers

  • Designed for candidates with a KCSE certificate (minimum D- grade and above)
  • Training duration: Two terms of in-class instruction followed by 3 months mandatory industrial attachment
  • Graduates receive both NSC II certification and Government Trade Test certifications

2. Skill Upgrading Program

  • Tailored for industry workers already practicing without formal certification
  • Duration: 3 months in training and 3 months on-site attachment

  • Selection of candidates will be managed in collaboration with:
    • Kenya Building Construction, Timber & Furniture Industries Employees Union

3. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Assessment

  • Targeting skilled individuals with years of experience but no formal papers
  • Candidates will be assessed based on existing knowledge, skills, and competency
  • Successful candidates receive Trade Test Certification, validating their skills and improving employability

Target Beneficiaries

This scholarship program has been designed to reach those with the greatest potential but least access to formal education. Applicants must fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Youth artisans (ages 18–35) working on construction sites without college education or training certificates
  • KCSE certificate holders with D- grade and above who have an interest in carpentry, plumbing, solar, or electrical installation
  • Workers with informal sector experience needing trade certification to advance
  • Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to promote gender inclusivity

Industrial Attachment (Workplace Learning)

All selected trainees will be required to undergo three months of practical industrial attachment, facilitated through NITA’s industry partnerships.

This on-the-job exposure ensures that learners acquire real-world skills, align with employer expectations, and transition smoothly into long-term employment or self-employment.

Certification Pathway

Upon successful completion, candidates will be awarded:

  • National Skills Certificate II (NSC II) issued by NITA
  • Government Trade Test certification (Grades III, II, or I depending on competency level)
