Key Responsibilities
As a Tyre Fitter, you will play a central role in ensuring the operational readiness and safety of commercial truck tyres. You will work closely with technicians, warehouse staff, and drivers to uphold service excellence in the following areas:
Tyre Installation and Balancing
- Fit new tyres to commercial trucks according to manufacturer specifications.
- Use professional tools to ensure tyres are correctly mounted and secured.
- Balance tyres using electronic or mechanical methods to prevent premature wear and vibration.
- Check wheel alignment and recommend alignment services where necessary.
Preventive Maintenance and Inspections
- Conduct regular inspections of tyres to detect signs of wear, underinflation, cracking, or other hazards.
- Schedule and perform routine maintenance to extend tyre lifespan.
- Log observations and maintenance actions in standard checklists or software platforms.
Emergency Tyre Repairs
- Respond quickly to emergency breakdowns involving tyre punctures or blowouts.
- Perform patch repairs or tyre replacements onsite or at designated company yards.
- Document repairs and follow up with inspections to confirm safety compliance.
Tyre Rotation and Pressure Management
- Execute tyre rotations to ensure even tread wear across the fleet.
- Measure and adjust air pressure levels for optimal performance and fuel efficiency.
- Use advanced gauges and diagnostic tools to monitor inflation and wear patterns.
Inventory and Recordkeeping
- Update tyre usage records in inventory databases to support procurement planning.
- Track each tyre’s lifecycle, from installation through multiple services to final disposal.
- Report inconsistencies in tyre data or wear patterns to the Tyre Management Supervisor.
Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to internal SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and external regulations from NTSA and NEMA.
- Wear appropriate safety gear including gloves, overalls, eye protection, and boots.
- Participate in safety audits and emergency drills.
Client and Team Support
- Communicate clearly with drivers and colleagues regarding service schedules and roadworthiness.
- Train junior fitters or assist in onboarding when needed.
- Provide courteous service when addressing tyre issues or driver concerns.
Qualifications and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
- KCSE Certificate or equivalent academic qualification.
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience as a Tyre Fitter, automotive technician, or similar role.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in tyre fitting tools such as tyre changers, balancing machines, bead breakers, and torque wrenches.
- Understanding of truck tyre categories, ply ratings, retreading limitations, and repair protocols.
- Ability to diagnose tyre issues and determine whether repair or replacement is necessary.
Physical and Safety Competence
- Physically fit with the ability to lift heavy tyres and stand for extended periods.
- Awareness of weather conditions, as many tasks are outdoors or roadside.
- Commitment to workplace safety and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Interpersonal Skills
- Good communication skills, especially when interacting with drivers or senior staff.
- Willingness to learn and improve technical skills through in-house training.
- Positive attitude and ability to follow detailed instructions.
