As the Data Manager, you will oversee the end-to-end data management lifecycle—from capture and design to interpretation and visualization. Your primary goal will be to ensure that data across all Optiven departments is accurate, secure, and actionable. You’ll work closely with department heads and the data science team to derive powerful business insights and ensure compliance with national and global data protection regulations.

Key Responsibilities
Data Strategy and Governance
- Develop and implement data strategies and policies that align with the organization’s business objectives
- Design organizational data frameworks to streamline collection, analysis, and reporting across departments
- Ensure alignment with legal, regulatory, and ethical data usage standards, including Kenya’s Data Protection Act (2019), GDPR, and ISO 27001
- Oversee data governance protocols, including access control, retention, and role-based permissions
- Perform regular audits and data quality checks to maintain integrity, accuracy, and consistency
Data Infrastructure Management
- Manage internal databases and data repositories, including SQL, Oracle, and other DBMS platforms
- Evaluate and implement data management tools (e.g., ETL solutions, data pipelines)
- Oversee cloud storage and data warehouse infrastructure on platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud
- Monitor system performance and execute optimizations to support scalability and speed
Data Analytics and Reporting
- Conduct organization-wide data analysis to uncover trends, relationships, and business opportunities
- Oversee the creation of actionable dashboards using Power BI or Tableau to inform strategic decision-making
- Establish and track KPIs to measure the performance of internal departments
- Initiate quarterly business intelligence reviews to guide senior leadership on key operational metrics
Data Protection and Security
- Monitor security risks and develop mitigation plans to safeguard data assets
- Lead training and awareness programs on data protection and cybersecurity
- Conduct regular security audits and penetration testing to identify vulnerabilities
- Ensure full compliance with all national and international data regulations
Innovation and Automation
- Identify automation opportunities in data workflows to reduce manual intervention
- Support AI and machine learning integrations to enhance predictive capabilities
- Promote a culture of innovation by implementing emerging data technologies and analytics tools
- Evaluate and recommend new platforms to improve operational efficiency and reporting accuracy
Leadership and Team Management
- Train, mentor, and manage the data science team, ensuring effective task delegation and delivery
- Promote accuracy, integrity, and security across all data operations
- Coordinate with stakeholders across departments to align data strategy with business goals
- Assign responsibilities, monitor timelines, and ensure compliance with project objectives
- Foster a collaborative work environment that promotes data literacy and transparency
Qualifications and Skills
Academic Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or Mathematics
- A Master’s Degree in a related field is an added advantage
Work Experience
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in data science or analytics
- At least 2–3 years in a supervisory role within a data-focused function
Professional Certifications (Preferred)
- Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP)
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)
- ISO 27001 Implementer or Auditor Certification
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in SQL, Python, R, and ETL tools
- Familiarity with database management systems such as MySQL, SQL Server, and Oracle
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Hands-on experience with data visualization platforms: Tableau, Power BI
- Deep understanding of AI, machine learning, and data mining techniques
