Introduction

About the State Department for Basic Education

Interns in the internship program will work under the supervision of Sub County Directors of Education and contribute directly to policy implementation at the grassroots level.
Key Responsibilities
Interns selected under this internship program will take up a variety of roles aimed at supporting both learners and educators. Specific responsibilities include:
- Support E-learning and content development aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and national schemes of work.
- Assist classroom teachers by offering technical guidance and on-the-spot training on the use of digital literacy devices provided to schools.
- Participate in DLP implementation through direct facilitation of digital lessons and monitoring device use.
- Innovate and design digital solutions for educational challenges encountered at the classroom level.
- Promote safe and ethical use of digital tools by educating learners and staff on cybersecurity, privacy, and online safety.
- Support school leadership teams in developing ICT-supported school policies, particularly on lesson delivery and content archiving.
- Provide first-line ICT support by troubleshooting devices, maintaining digital infrastructure, and conducting routine assessments of digital systems in the schools.
- Document user challenges and propose improvements to optimize the use of educational technology.
- Track and report the effectiveness of digital content, its relevance to learners’ needs, and propose updates where necessary.
- Build teacher confidence in using digital devices, offering group workshops or one-on-one coaching sessions.
- Maintain updated records of all DLP activities conducted during the internship period including daily logs, attendance, and device usage reports.
- Coordinate with IT officers and sub-county teams for technical escalations and knowledge-sharing platforms.
- Facilitate basic software installations and updates on digital literacy devices to ensure optimal functionality.
- Promote continuous learning and innovation in digital literacy through local hackathons, innovation clubs, or school-based digital fairs.
Qualifications and Skills
To be eligible for this internship program, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:
- Must have graduated not earlier than 2020.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education with ICT specialization, OR
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Information Communication Technology (ICT), OR
- Hold a Diploma in ICT or ICT Integration in Education from a recognized institution.
- Must demonstrate knowledge in the following areas:
- Networking and infrastructure setup
- Applications development and deployment
- Information security protocols and best practices
- Project management and digital resource planning
- Must be well-versed in E-learning platforms such as Google Classroom, Moodle, Microsoft Teams, or any open-source LMS.
- Must have experience or training in digital content development using tools such as Articulate, Adobe Captivate, or Canva for Education.
- Strong research skills and the ability to apply digital innovations in a learning context.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work with school staff and students.
- Willingness to be deployed to any Sub County in Kenya.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated passion for education, youth development, and digital literacy.
Duration of Internship
The internship program will run for a non-renewable term of twelve (12) months, starting from the date of deployment. This structured period is designed to ensure maximum skills transfer, real-world application of academic knowledge, and meaningful contribution to national education development. Interns are expected to commit full-time and will be placed under regular supervision and performance evaluations throughout the year.
Stipend and Compensation
All participants in the internship program will receive a stipend provided by the Government of Kenya through the State Department for Basic Education. The specific amount is determined by applicable government guidelines and will be disbursed monthly through official government channels. While this is a training program, the stipend is designed to support the intern’s daily logistics, sustenance, and participation in program activities.
Certificate of Completion
At the end of the internship program, interns who have successfully completed their assignments and received satisfactory evaluations will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. This certificate, endorsed by the State Department for Basic Education, will be an important credential for future employment in government, private sector, or civil society programs.
