Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Operational Oversight
- Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring adherence to protocols and quality standards.
- Supervise technical and administrative staff, providing guidance, performance reviews, and ongoing mentorship.
- Collaborate with the Regional Manager to align laboratory functions with strategic health objectives.
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
- Implement quality management systems aligned with national and international laboratory standards.
- Ensure compliance with KMLTTB, ISO, and internal regulatory guidelines.
- Monitor quality indicators, control measures, and participate in internal audits and external assessments.
Technical Oversight
- Review and authorize laboratory results before release to medical practitioners.
- Oversee calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and safety.
- Develop and implement SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for various tests and operations.
Inventory and Budget Management
- Manage laboratory inventory, ordering reagents and consumables to avoid stockouts.
- Control expenditure and support budget planning for lab-related supplies and services.
- Maintain proper records of inventory movement, supplier engagements, and usage trends.
Staff Training and Development
- Identify training needs and facilitate skill development programs for laboratory staff.
- Coordinate CME sessions, workshops, and updates on new diagnostic techniques.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement in staff performance and learning.
Client Service and Communication
- Engage with clinicians, patients, and stakeholders to ensure customer satisfaction and accurate result interpretation.
- Address complaints or discrepancies swiftly and effectively.
- Provide technical advice to clients and partners regarding sample collection and result interpretation.
Strategic Reporting and Data Analysis
- Compile monthly performance reports highlighting trends, KPIs, and quality indicators.
- Support data collection for research, monitoring, and evaluation purposes.
- Assist the Regional Manager in preparing strategic presentations and recommendations.
Qualifications and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, Higher National Diploma, or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from an accredited institution
- Certification and licensure by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB)
- At least 3 years of experience in a supervisory role or 5 years in medical laboratory operations
- Training in laboratory management, ISO standards, or medical auditing is a strong advantage
- Computer proficiency, particularly in LIS (Laboratory Information Systems), Excel, and health data platforms
Desirable Competencies
- Strong command of quality management systems, including ISO 15189:2012
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Capacity to lead and motivate teams, especially in high-pressure environments
- Ability to analyze complex data and present it in understandable formats
- High degree of integrity, reliability, and professional accountability
