Government-backed initiative aims to strengthen digital education in Kenya’s primary schools while empowering ICT graduates with real-world experience
Nairobi, Kenya – June 2025
In a bold move to accelerate digital transformation in the education sector, the State Department for Basic Education under the Ministry of Education has opened 1,000 internship positions for young ICT and Education graduates across the country. The internship opportunities fall under the flagship Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) and represent a strategic investment in Kenya’s vision of achieving full ICT integration in basic education.
This year’s intake—dubbed DLP Cohort 4—offers a twelve-month, full-time paid internship program designed to place graduates directly in Sub County Education Offices, where they will support e-learning, virtual instruction platforms, and ICT infrastructure in public primary schools.
“This internship program is not just about youth employment; it’s about building capacity within our schools to embrace 21st-century education,” a senior official from the Ministry said during a press briefing on Tuesday.
Who Can Apply?
According to official criteria released by the Ministry, eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Graduated no earlier than 2020
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with ICT, or a Bachelor’s/Diploma in ICT or ICT Integration in Education
- Possess knowledge in networking, applications development, project management, and information security
- Demonstrate skills in e-learning integration, digital content development, and virtual classroom tools
Applicants must also be willing to serve full-time at Sub County Education Offices in any of Kenya’s 47 counties.
What Interns Will Do
Successful candidates will be tasked with a range of assignments to help integrate digital tools in classroom instruction. These include:
- Supporting primary school teachers in using digital literacy devices
- Assisting in developing e-learning content aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC)
- Maintaining and troubleshooting ICT equipment in schools
- Training school staff on the safe and ethical use of digital platforms
- Innovating classroom-based solutions for digital learning challenges
The internship program is expected to bridge the skills gap between recent graduates and workforce demands in the evolving digital education space.
Duration, Stipend, and Certification
The internship runs for 12 months, after which interns will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by the State Department for Basic Education—a credential that can significantly boost their employability in both public and private sectors.
Interns will also receive a monthly stipend from the government to cover basic expenses. The exact amount has not been publicly disclosed but is said to be consistent with existing public internship benchmarks.
Government’s Digital Push in Education
Launched in 2016, the Digital Literacy Programme is a cornerstone of the government’s education modernization efforts. The DLP has already distributed thousands of devices to public schools and trained hundreds of teachers in digital instruction. With the deployment of DLP Cohort 4 interns, the Ministry hopes to provide schools with much-needed technical support while creating meaningful opportunities for Kenya’s growing pool of ICT and education graduates.
“This internship program supports our broader agenda of equipping learners with 21st-century skills, closing the digital divide, and future-proofing our education system,” said an official from the Ministry’s ICT Directorate.
How to Apply
Interested and qualified candidates are required to apply online through the Public Service Commission (PSC) job portal before the application deadline on 23rd June 2025.

Why It Matters
With youth unemployment at historic highs and ICT playing an increasingly central role in Kenya’s development, this internship program offers a rare blend of public service, technical growth, and professional exposure. For many young Kenyans, it may be the launchpad into long-term careers in education, ICT, and government service.
The rollout of 1,000 digital literacy interns also aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, both of which underscore the role of youth and digital innovation in sustainable development.
