✅ 1) What Shortlisters Look For in the First 30 Seconds

For a Technical Purchasing & Sales role in e-commerce, shortlisters at ShopIt Store are hunting for Technical Literacy combined with Commercial Awareness. In the first 30 seconds, they will check if you have the mandatory “B Plain” in KCSE and if you have a background in their specific categories (like Computing or Electronics). They prioritize candidates who demonstrate “Online Research” skills because e-commerce relies heavily on comparing competitor prices and features. A CV that looks organized and uses technical terminology correctly will pass the initial scan much faster than a generic sales CV.

✅ 2) How to Tailor Your CV to This Job (Fast but Effective)

ShopIt uses a Google Form, which means your CV needs to be extremely easy to parse and should focus on technical categories.

Top 10 Keywords to Include:

  • Technical Product Knowledge (e.g., Networking/Telecom)
  • Vendor Onboarding
  • Product Cataloging
  • Price Negotiation
  • Market Research & Analysis
  • Microsoft Excel (Spreadsheets)
  • User Requirement Matching
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Digital Marketing
  • Inventory Cataloging

Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Highlight Technical Fields: Create a specific section called “Technical Areas of Expertise” and list 3-5 fields from the advert that you are familiar with (e.g., Computing and Security Surveillance).
  • Prepare for Tests: Since English and Spreadsheets will be tested, mention any certifications or specific advanced functions you know (like VLOOKUP or Pivot Tables).
  • B-Plain Visibility: Ensure your KCSE grade is clearly stated in your “Education” section.

✅ 3) Upgrade Your Professional Summary (Give 2 Examples)

Weak Generic Summary:

I am a hardworking graduate with a diploma in marketing. I want to learn about sales and purchasing at ShopIt Store. I am good at using computers and I am very honest. I hope to be considered for this internship.

Strong Tailored Summary:

Proactive Business graduate with a B Plain in KCSE and a strong technical background in Networking and Electronics. Highly proficient in online market research and advanced spreadsheet management for product pricing and cataloging. Skilled in matching complex user requirements with technical product specifications to drive sales. A self-driven individual with high integrity, eager to apply negotiation and marketing skills within a leading e-commerce supply chain.

✅ 4) Turn Duties into Results (Show Proof, Not Claims)

Even if you haven’t had a job before, use your school projects or attachments to show competence:

  • Weak: Did research on products.
  • Strong: Conducted online research on 50+ ICT products to compare market pricing and features, resulting in a 10% more competitive pricing strategy during a class project.
  • Weak: Good at using Excel.
  • Strong: Utilized advanced spreadsheet functions to manage a catalog of 200+ inventory items, ensuring 100% accuracy in data entry and categorization.
  • Weak: Talked to suppliers.
  • Strong: Negotiated with local vendors during a 3-month attachment to secure a 5% discount on bulk office supplies, demonstrating effective cost-saving skills.

✅ 5) Cover Letter That Gets Read (Not Long, Not Boring)

Keep it focused on the “Technical” aspect of the role.

Tailored Example:

Dear Hiring Team,

I am writing to apply for the Technical Purchasing & Sales Internship at ShopIt Store. As an avid follower of the ICT retail market in Kenya, I have always admired ShopIt’s commitment to providing a superior shopping experience through technical expertise.

With a background in [Your Technical Field, e.g., Computing and Electronics], I am confident in my ability to handle product cataloging and user requirement matching with high precision. During my [Degree/Diploma] program, I developed advanced online research skills and a deep proficiency in spreadsheets, which I am eager to apply to your vendor onboarding and product pricing processes. I am particularly excited about the challenge of marketing plan development and price negotiation in the fast-paced e-commerce sector.

I meet all the minimum requirements, including a B Plain in KCSE, and I am ready to undergo the proficiency tests in English and IT. My self-driven nature and high integrity align perfectly with ShopIt’s core values.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

✅ 6) Application Submission Checklist (Most People Fail Here)

  • Google Form Link: Use the provided link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeiFK9v6V5kK6gywt8V6NyTyEWjTYPtslFJoE0FG_DAo3Jcaw/viewform.
  • KCSE Grade: Do not omit your grade; if you have lower than a B Plain, highlight your higher-level qualifications or technical experience to compensate.
  • File Naming: FirstName_LastName_Technical_Sales_CV.pdf.
  • Testing Readiness: Refresh your knowledge of Excel (Formulas, Sorting, Filtering) and formal English writing before the tests.

✅ 7) Common Reasons Applicants Don’t Get Shortlisted

  1. Low KCSE Grade: Not meeting the “B Plain” requirement without explaining other strengths.
  2. Missing Technical Background: Failing to list specific technical fields (like Phones, Power, or Industrial Supplies).
  3. Failing the Tests: Not being proficient enough in Excel or written English during the interview stage.
  4. Generic Application: Sending a CV that doesn’t mention “Cataloging” or “Vendors.”
  5. Lack of Integrity Mention: Integrity is explicitly listed; failing to show this in your summary or cover letter can be a red flag.
  6. Poor Research Skills: Appearing uninformed about what ShopIt actually sells or who their competitors are.

✅ 8) Action Plan (Do This in 20 Minutes)

  1. Minute 1-5: List the top 3 technical categories from the ad that you know best.
  2. Minute 6-12: Update your CV to include these categories and your KCSE grade.
  3. Minute 13-17: Open a spreadsheet and practice a few basic data entry and calculation tasks.
  4. Minute 18-20: Fill out the Google Form and upload your polished PDF CV.

“If you apply like a top candidate, you get treated like one—this is how you enter the shortlist.”
