About KEWASNET

Kenya Water and Sanitation Civil Society Network (KEWASNET) is a registered non-governmental and non-profit organization founded in August 2007 under the NGO Coordination Act. KEWASNET is Kenya’s leading civil society voice advocating for sustainable, equitable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services across the country.

As part of its strategic communications and learning agenda, KEWASNET is investing in upgrading its website and digital knowledge-sharing platform to increase visibility, accessibility, and sector-wide learning. The intern selected for this opportunity will play a key role in that digital transformation.

Purpose and Scope of the Internship

The intern will support the ongoing review, upgrading, and maintenance of the KEWASNET website and internal knowledge management platform. This involves:

  • Ensuring website functionality, visual appeal, and user-friendliness
  • Assisting with the restructuring of digital content and taxonomy
  • Supporting the tagging, storage, and categorization of WASH-related resources
  • Helping improve internal processes for managing knowledge and documents

This internship is critical to KEWASNET’s goals of building a vibrant, data-rich, and collaborative digital presence that can empower its members and partners across Kenya and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support full review and redesign of the KEWASNET website and knowledge platform
  • Assist in reorganizing website content, updating layouts, testing new features, and ensuring mobile responsiveness
  • Collaborate with web developers to improve UI/UX, site speed, and content management workflows
  • Contribute to improving navigation and user experience, including menu structure, search filters, and intuitive tagging
  • Ensure clarity and consistency in all digital content, aligning language and design with KEWASNET branding guidelines
  • Publish and update content (news, publications, events, blogs) in collaboration with the Communications Officer
  • Archive outdated materials and conduct regular content audits to ensure information accuracy
  • Maintain SEO compliance and mobile optimization, ensuring accessibility and adherence to digital standards
  • Perform platform security checks, identify bugs, broken links, or errors, and flag them to relevant stakeholders
  • Track web analytics and user engagement metrics, and assist in preparing basic analytical reports
  • Train KEWASNET staff and members on how to use the updated platform effectively
  • Prepare documentation and technical guides for system maintenance and user support

Deliverables

At the end of the internship period, the intern is expected to deliver the following outputs:

  1. Upgraded KEWASNET website with improved design, structure, performance, and content
  2. Fully functional knowledge-sharing platform, categorized by topics and audiences
  3. Documentation including a user manual, training materials, and back-end documentation
  4. Training sessions conducted with relevant staff or members on platform use
  5. Internship report detailing processes, milestones, challenges, achievements, and recommendations for future improvements

Intern Profile – Qualifications and Skills

Educational Qualifications:

  • Final-year student or recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in:
    • Information Technology
    • Computer Science
    • Knowledge Management
    • Web Design or Development
    • Digital Communication or other relevant technical fields

Technical Experience and Competencies:

  • Familiarity with website content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, SEO, and user interface (UI) principles
  • Strong editing and document structuring abilities
  • Understanding of web security, mobile responsiveness, and digital accessibility standards
  • Experience with file storage systems, tagging, metadata, and online libraries is an advantage
