Introduction
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), a premier research-to-policy think tank in Africa, is seeking to recruit 18 highly qualified and motivated Research Assistants (RAs) for its Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) Project.
This field-based opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about public health research, data collection, and engaging health care workers to improve the management of Cardiometabolic Diseases (CMDs) across Kenya. The PEP Project, under APHRC’s Research Capacity Strengthening Division, is designed to generate rigorous evidence and build local capacity to inform healthcare policy.

About the PEP Project
The Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) Project aims to strengthen the management of Cardiometabolic Diseases (CMDs) in Kenya through research and capacity building. The project focuses on assessing current practices, identifying gaps, and supporting education initiatives to enhance the ability of health professionals to manage CMDs effectively.
This round of research will be implemented in 11 counties, with fieldwork taking place across June and July 2025.
Locations of Assignment
Applicants must reside in at least one of the following counties:
- Narok
- Turkana
- Wajir
- West Pokot
- Tana River
- Trans Nzoia
- Marsabit
- Bomet
- Kwale
- Nairobi
- Mombasa
Flexibility to travel and work within any of these counties is mandatory. Selected candidates must be available to work continuously for up to 20 days away from their county of residence.
Key Responsibilities
Data Collection and Field Research
- Administer structured surveys using digital tools such as KoBoCollect
- Conduct in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) with healthcare workers and key stakeholders
- Transcribe audio recordings from interviews with precision and completeness
- Assist in logistics and coordination of data collection activities within the assigned county
Data Management
- Perform data entry, cleaning, verification, and quality assurance
- Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of all collected data
- Flag inconsistencies or challenges to the field coordinator or research officer promptly
Administrative and Logistical Support
- Coordinate with supervisors on daily field movements and progress updates
- Support logistical tasks such as transport arrangement, field mobilization, and daily activity tracking
- Manage digital devices used for data collection and ensure data syncing protocols are followed
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines:
- Public Health
- Community Health
- Anthropology
- Population Studies / Demography
- Statistics
- Epidemiology
- Community Development
- Or other related social sciences and health fields
- Demonstrated experience conducting:
- Structured surveys
- Key informant interviews
- In-depth interviews
- Focus group discussions
- Prior experience interacting with healthcare professionals during research is an added advantage
- Proficiency in both quantitative and qualitative research techniques is required
Technical Skills
- Skilled in using digital tools for data collection such as KoBoCollect or ODK
- Familiarity with statistical packages such as STATA, SPSS, or R for quantitative data management
- Working knowledge of qualitative data analysis software like NVivo or Atlas.ti
Residency Requirement
- Must be a current resident of at least one of the counties listed
- Willingness to travel outside your county for extended periods (up to 20 days) during fieldwork
Soft Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow protocols
- Capacity to work under minimal supervision
- Team player with the ability to work in a culturally diverse research environment
Language Requirements
- Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory
- Proficiency in local languages of the assigned county is a significant advantage
