The EU Delegation to Kenya is now offering a prestigious and fully funded traineeship opportunity for young professionals. This 6-month traineeship, beginning in October 2025, is based in the Political, Press and Information Section at the Delegation’s offices in Nairobi, Kenya.
This is a unique professional development opportunity that enables ambitious graduates to gain in-depth knowledge of the work of a diplomatic mission, EU-Kenya relations, and key global political developments. About the EU Delegation to Kenya
The European Union Delegation to Kenya functions as the official representation of the EU to the Republic of Kenya. It mirrors the role of an embassy and actively promotes the values, principles, and interests of the European Union. The Delegation supports political and economic partnerships, development cooperation, trade, human rights advocacy, and strategic dialogue between the EU and the Kenyan government and civil society.
The Political, Press and Information Section (PPI) specifically deals with monitoring political trends, media relations, strategic communication, and outreach efforts. This section contributes significantly to public diplomacy and analysis, ensuring the EU maintains effective, informed, and visible engagement with Kenyan institutions and the public.
Key Responsibilities of the Trainee
As part of the Political, Press and Information Section, the selected trainee will take on a range of responsibilities under the supervision of EU advisors and communication officers.
Political Affairs and Research Duties:
- Monitor Kenyan political and legislative developments across local and national platforms
- Assist the Political Advisor in preparing briefs, internal reports, and trend analyses
- Contribute to high-level political reporting on domestic and regional African affairs
- Assist in the preparation and coordination of political meetings and events involving EU representatives
Public Diplomacy, Media & Communication Support:
- Contribute to the EU Delegation’s media outreach, working closely with the Press and Information Officer
- Assist in the design and layout of communication materials, fact sheets, and campaign visuals
- Provide support in regularly updating the EU Delegation’s social media channels and official website
- Conduct media monitoring and press reviews, compiling daily summaries and insights
Administrative and Logistical Support:
- Attend and support the organization of meetings, conferences, and public engagements
- Prepare meeting agendas, talking points, and minutes
- Fulfil other administrative and communications-related duties as required
Who Should Apply?
This traineeship is designed for ambitious graduates who meet the following eligibility criteria and qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Must hold a university degree in International Relations, Political Science, Journalism, Media, African Studies, Development Studies, Security Studies, or related disciplines
- Strong analytical, drafting, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated interest in international relations and African political affairs
- Fluent in English (spoken and written); knowledge of French or Swahili is an advantage
- Ability to work independently and contribute effectively in a small, dynamic team
- Strong commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and EU values
- Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to learn
Additional Qualifications (Preferred but Not Mandatory):
- General knowledge of EU foreign policy priorities, especially in Africa
- Experience in social media management, public relations, or media production
- Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Canva, Adobe Illustrator, or InDesign
- Prior experience working or volunteering in nonprofits, NGOs, or international organizations

Eligibility Notes

Traineeships will only be offered in compliance with both Kenyan laws and the laws of the country of origin of the trainee.
Important Legal & Travel Notes
For EU Nationals:
- Must present proof of health insurance that includes pandemic coverage and medical evacuation support
- Must obtain a valid visa/residence permit for Kenya, in accordance with Kenyan immigration laws
For Kenyan Nationals:
- Must provide proof of university completion, recent graduation, or postgraduate enrolment
- Must provide personal insurance coverage and a commitment to adhere to EU professional conduct standards
